I'm back after a bit of a hiatus and I'm finally getting stuck into the new Tyranid miniatures.
First up are the Hormagaunts, the melee variant of the iconic Tyranid swarms units.
The kit comes with 10 Hormagaunts and a base of Rippers. Unsurprisingly, there is very limited variation offered in the poses but the new gaunts are highly dynamic compared to the previous iteration. Despite a slightly larger base however, some of the poses do still overhang by quite a bit, but I have not had any of mine tip over, even when on slight slopes.
Another surprise was the fact that there were a few spare heads included in the kit which allowed for some slight variations, but duplicates will still be very noticeable if they are deployed en masse.
I had some hopes of using these more dynamic bodies to make efficient use of the spare spinefists in the Termagant kit, but the arms are no longer compatible between Termagants and Hormagaunts. Indeed, the talons in this kit are designed for use with specific bodies so even within the kit there is little kitbashing possible.
All in all, the models are a great improvement over the previous version. There were only slight mould lines but they took no time to remove and the models went together very quickly.
