Slann Starmaster Kit Review

The final new Seraphon kit released in the army box for me to cover and the centerpiece of the set, the Slann Starmaster is a worthy update to the older Slann model.

Once again, this kit is spread across three different sprues and the quality of the sculpt is stellar. There were minor mould lines along the edge of the many long straight edges but nothing too bad.

There is a surprising amount of customisation available to the Slann. In the left hand, you have the option of a scepter or crystal skull. In the right hand, you have three different options; levitating a capsule, gathering power, and chucking a spell forward. Finally, there are three head options; bare, a headpiece, and a feathered crown.

On the palanquin itself you get a few options too. On the left armrest, you can choose between a toad or a skink, itself with a choice of offerings. On the right armrest, you can choose between a chameleon or a spear wielding skink. You also get to choose between two different plaques at the top and on the front of the palanquin too. Finally, at the front left, you can choose between some hanging vines with a baby Coatl (I'll take an adult one too, Games Workshop, please) and some more vegetation that acts as a support to the base.

This was a trickier kit to put together than any of the others in the set, but it was also a very satisfying build. The individual pieces fit together in some odd ways but as long as you dry fit each part before gluing them and make sure to clean up each piece well, you should not run into many issues. There are obvious sub-assemblies which the instructions have you build so you just need to leave them separate until painted if you are so inclined.

It will be a rare army indeed that does not include at least one Slann. Starborne in particular rely heavily upon them and unless you are also running Kroak, two could be a common enough sight. The range of customisations is welcome for this reason so that no two Slann need look alike. They cast and unbind three spells which allows them great utility, along side the relics and traits available to them so they are key to any Seraphon host.

All in all, this is a great new kit and if you are interested in Seraphon in anyway, shape, or form, you will want to pick this up. It modernises the old resin Slann, and gives it a much greater presence on the board. Great kit.
