Saurus Warrior Kit Review

Today I will be reviewing the new Seraphon Warrior kit that was available in the Seraphon Army Set and will be launched in the next month or two for general release. The set of 10 warriors are spread across 3 sprues, images of which I have included below.

The bodies of each Saurus are collected together logically on the sprue, although you do need to go looking for the matching pair of arms throughout the sprues. The kit comes with 10 bare heads and one armoured head intended for the Champion. Unlike the arms, these heads are interchangeable between bodies. The Champion also gets a unique club and spear to set him apart, although the spear is not distinct enough that it is really noticeable. You get the options for Champion, Standard Bearer, and Musician, but thankfully get enough weapons that none of these are required. There are two variants of the standard in the kit, although they are both similar, being snakes that share most of the same components.

The actual sculpts are very nice indeed, a huge improvement over the older Saurus sculpts. They are actually not as big as I thought they were going to be from the previews. They fill a 32mm base but aren't that much larger than the previous sculpt, just bulked out. There are some mouldlines, especially along the weapons and shields, but nothing too egregious. Sadly, the dinosaur scale shields are no longer with us, as the new shields are all made of celestite.

The warriors assemble quickly and I encountered no major issues. My one complaint about the kit is the way they Saurus bodies go together. They essentially go together in left and right halves, with a third piece for the chest bridging the gaps between them. As I say, I did not encounter any issues, but it's easy to see how issues could arise with that assembly.

These new Saurus look amazing. If you have ever played Total War: Warhammer and liked the look of the Saurus in that, then you will be a fan of this kit. In terms of rules, the weapon options are a bit of a wash, but I would lean towards the clubs. Aesthetically however, I much prefer the look of the unit with the spears and so that is how I have assembled this first unit. It's a shame that they did not take the opportunity to introduce any new weapon types; I know that I have been dreaming of Great Weapon Saurus since my Warhammer Fantasy days, but it is clear from looking at the sprues that they have packed these kits with as much as they can feasibly get on the three sprues.

All in all, great kit that finally does Saurus justice. Enjoyable to assemble and I can't wait to get them painted up. With all the crevasses, they will take Contrast extremely well if you are so minded.
